 A few ideas on Spoken English teaching

                        I have been teaching a spoken English course since 2006. Throughout these years, my primary objective has become clear: to identify and implement practical, creative methods that effectively support students in acquiring spoken English skills. My central focus is to develop teaching strategies that are not only result-oriented but also foster an engaging and enjoyable learning environment. Ultimately, my aim is for students to internalize and actively use spoken English beyond the classroom, integrating it into their daily lives.

 Sometimes, I feel that I have tried it at my best level, but it didn’t bring out the desired result. At that time, I have to be reflective and thoughtful about my methods as well as techniques. Every day, I should be at my desk with reviews of my daily activities. Further, I should ask myself about my strategies.

 This year I promise myself that I am bound to give the best results everywhere I teach it. Let me gather a few points about my ideas, which can help me. I need to observe students’ routine, their habits, likes and dislikes, and behaviour patterns. I have to consider what can bring happiness and joy in their learning. That should be applied first. What instructions do they listen to every day, taken into account.  These instructions can be applied on the very first day of the academic year. Then it should be used throughout the year.

 Thirdly, I have to introduce the idea of the same sentence, only pronouns to be changed or replaced in daily routine. Let me give an example.

I like you.

 You like me.

 I understand you

 You understand me

 I listen to you

 You listen to me

 I help you

 You help me

            The above sentences are to be practised regularly. Another idea is that I have to introduce the practice of a daily routine. Examples are given below.

* What’s the time now?

* It’s 2

* Thank you

* Welcome

 * May I go to the washroom, teacher?

* Yes

* Thank you!

* Welcome

 * What’s your problem?

* No problem?

* Ok

* Thank you!

* Welcome

* May I drink water, teacher?

* Yes

* Thank you!

* Welcome

 Such activities to be carried out so that the students can learn English at their level. And they will carry such conversations outside. That can impact their routine.

 Shadowing methods can be helpful in class. I have to write the routine sentences and practice well before going to class. Even this can be associated with objects. Let me share an example…

 * I drink water (showing a water bottle or glass)

* I read a book (showing a book with reading action)

* I eat chocolates (showing chocolates with the action of eating)

* I walk into the class (actual walk in the class while demonstration)

* I talk on a mobile (showing the mobile and a demonstration)

* I look at the fan (looking at the fan while demonstrating?

 These ideas should be systematically integrated into my instructional action plan. My commitment this year is to ensure meaningful results by applying innovative and well-structured teaching strategies. Incorporating activities such as listening to and exchanging daily routine questions with students can foster greater engagement and practical language use. The following examples illustrate how such activities may be implemented.

 * Do you like your school?

* Do you eat mangoes?

* Do you watch TV?

* Do you help your mother?

* Do you play with your friends?

* Do you read books?

* Do you clean your home?

                                        With the above-mentioned ideas, I feel this year will be result-oriented for my students and me. Let me hope with full of ideas and creativities.
