On 21 and 22 November, 2019, The Child Rights Mela is
jointly organized by SMC, Child friendly city knowledge centre Surat, UNICEF,
and Jeevan Bharati School. The Mela is chaired by the chief of UNICEF, SMC
Officer, and other dignitaries. It started with lighting a lamp and prayer to
the Goddess Saraswati. On the occasion of 150 years of birth anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhiji, The Child Mela is organized at Jeevan Bharati ground, Surat.
It began at 10.30 with the Mela Organiser, who is in charge of the various
clubs at Jeevan Bharati School, shared her experience about the clubs and the
child rights fair. She said in her statement that there are 200 children and 30
institutes to participate in the Mela. Then the facilitation followed with the books
and the saplings to the guests. After that Ms. Laxmi Bhavani was called to
share her views as a chief of UNICEF, Gujarat.
She pointed out that the children would get their rights through the
Mela. Further she shared the five necessary rights of the children. These are
good living, development, good education, protection, joyful and quality
education. At the same time she remembered her experience of Gujarat University
Boot Camp Programme. She was concerned about the children’s malnutrition
issues. The facts were given by her how the children to be the victim to the
structure of the society and system. She appealed everybody to come forward to
fight for them with public private partnership. She even admired the Atal
Tinkering Lab of Jeevan Bharati School. The national song was played after her
speech.
I along with others participated as the volunteer and
assisted them. I was at Stall number 12. There were total 30 stalls with
various activities focusing upon the children, their rights and the
environmental issues. These were immensely full of creative and innovative. It
is a must to visit the Mela and a worth visiting.
