Figures of speech

You have seen my video of figures of speech on YouTube. Here, I present it in simple and easy language.

1)   Antithesis-:

Anti means opposite and thesis means thoughts or ideas. When two thoughts or ideas are found in a sentence, is called Antithesis.

Ex:- United we stand divided we fall.

2)   Oxymoron-:

Oxy means opposite and moron means word. When two opposite words come together are called Oxymoron.

Ex:- My life is an open secret.

        She is the wisest fool.

3)   Simile-:

It is a direct comparison between two different objects or events is called Simile. Here we find the words such as- ‘As, so and Like’

Ex:- He is as brave as a lion.

        The room is as hot as furnace.

4)   Metaphor-:

It is indirect comparison made in a sentence.

Ex:- He is a lion.

        This room is a furnace.

5)   Alliteration-:

Letters are repeated in a sentence.

Ex:- The bright bird flew.

        Four fools fall in a fountain.

6)   Repetition-:

Words or phrase are repeated in a sentence.

Ex:- Two and two make four.

        No stir in the air, no stir in the sea.

7)   Personification-:

Any non-living object gets human quality is called personification.

Ex:- The roses were smiling and the wind was telling a fairy tale.  

8)   Transferred epithet-:

Epithet means feeling and when human feeling is transferred to non-living object or thing. It is called as Transferred epithet.

Ex:- I slept on a restless bed.

        The night was sleepless for him.

9)   Climax-:

Ideas or phrases are arranged in ascending order. It is called Climax.

Ex:- She came, she saw and she conquered.

        He has no rest, no joy, nor peace.

10)        Anticlimax-:

Ideas or phrases are arranged in descending order. It is called Anticlimax.

Ex:- He swore by the Sun, the moon and the star.
